  1. It is quite obvious that there is a thin line between love and hate in chapter 25. After Stamp Paid found out that his wife, Vashti, had sex with his slave master, he was so furious that he decided to change his name, and basically disown his wife. Stamp said, "I been low but that was as low as I ever got... I changed my name (275)." It is apparent that Stamp Paid's defense mechanism for dealing with the hurt was to change his name and move on with his life. Stamp's story is similar to Paul D's and Sethe's story because the most logical thing for both characters to do is to move forward with their lives, even if that means that they hate each other for the purpose of forgetting each other.

  2. For Stamp Paid, who in his younger years was called Joshua, the thin line between love and hate became blurred the day that Vashti his wife said " I'm back, Josh" as if he were suppose to welcome her with open arms (275). Stamp said he looked at the back of her neck with the black ribbon around it and wanted to break it "...like a twig-just snap it" because he felt low and it was the lowest he ever felt (275). They were married for almost a year, and all of that time he says he never touched her and instead master's son did. The master's wife did nothing to help although she knew what was going on; she showed no sign of emotion the day Stamp asked if she had seen his wife, she got a little rosy but just stood in the back yard looking at her glass of water when he left (275). Stamp loved Vashti deeply, but hated her because of what the master's son did to her and because she would not allow him to kill him. Paul D also has a love hate relationship with the woman he cares for, Sethe. He loves her despite all of the things she has been through: losing her husband, having her milk stolen, and the planting of a cherry choke tree in her back but there is one experience that she has gone through which makes him hate her. The murder of her child is what makes him despise her, he does not understand her actions or her intentions and the hate that arises in him at the moment Sethe explains the story, causes him to leave the house. Even though hate is what causes both men to leave the women they love, it is the love that they had for those women that causes them to feel their pain.

  3. Through his story, the adage that there is a thin line between love and hate is discussed as Stamp Paid is explaining how he could no longer bring himself to love his wife, Vashti. After he discovered that Vashti had sex with their slave master, he was so irate and disgusted that he couldn't even touch her. He wanted so badly to wring her neck, but he didn't do it, because he knew that he still loved her and there wasn't enough hate in his heart to bring himself to harm a woman that he still felt some kind of love for. Yet, it was hard for him to just forgive her and move on because he felt that his love had been tainted and ruined. By changing his name he was able to move on from her without crossing the line between love and hate.

Stamp's story is a good example of a thin love and hate because it is too easy to go from being "head over heels" for someone to just plain despising them. Stamp had not touch touched his wife for a whole year, then he finally ran out of patience and dropped a hint to his wife. Stamp went from loving his wife to changing his name just to be rid of her. His story relates to Sethe and Paul D because Paul just picked up and left when he found out that Sethe really did kill her daughter, and that she would keep a stranger in her house even though he felt uncomfortable around her.

  5. Stamp Paid exemlifies love and hate because he loved his wife,Vashti, so much that he married her and was content with life. When he found out that she had sex with the slave master he basically repressed all his feelings except anger and hate and pushed his wife to the side. He also changed his name to deal with the pain he was feeling. How this story relates to him and Sethe is that to go forward in life you might have to forget some people which isn't easy to say the least.

  6. Stamp Paid's story shows the thin line between love and hate. His wife, Vashti, was constantly "with" the master's son the entire year that he and her were married. Stamp wanted to kill him but she wouldn't let him. He loved her greatly but hated her for not allowing him to correct thei situation. Paul D. loves Sethe more than he has ever loved another person but when he found out about what she had done to her child he hated her. He hated her because he could not understand why she would do something like that. The women are the symbols of love but thier actions cause the men to hate them so much that they feel they need to leave.

  7. Stamp Paid is an example of love a hate because he loved his wife very dearly but he now has hatred in his heart for her. When she was forced to have sex with the slave masters nephew he started to hate her and could nologer look at her the same once she came back. His hurt was so deep that he changed his name and thus Stamp Paid was formed and Joshua left behind. This can also relate to Paul D and Sthe because theyboth have done the samething minus changing their names. They hate their past lives and have decided to leave them behind and start over but for some reason the hate is still relavent and is translated into their present life.

Stamp Paid's story exeplifies that there is a thin line between love and hate through the relationship he had with his wife. When he and his wife were "in love" Stamp was known as Joshua. His identity as Joshua showed a more innocent man who was content with the demands of his master as long as his wife was around. As soon as Stamp realized that his wife had been sleeping with his master he snapped her neck, and changed his name. The fact that he could lose all feelings that may have been attached to his wife by changing his name shows just how thin the line between love and hate truly is. Paul D and Sethe's relationship is similar to Stamp's story, but instead Beloved takes place of the slave master. Beloved has forced a wedge between Sethe and Paul D, just as the slave master did to Stamp's marriage.

  9. Stamp Paid revealed the thin line between love and hate when he told the story of his wife, Vashti. After he found out about her cheating with the master's son, he couldn't even touch her. For a whole year he did not touch her. He hated her so much that he imagined snapping her neck, but he didn't. He let her live because he still has a deep love for her. He even inquired about her to the master's daughter, when Vishti was missing for a while.

  10. Stamp Paid's story plays with the thin line of love and hate. He has a deep affection and love for his wife Vashti. They were married for all of about one year. At this point in time Stamp was referred to as his actual name, Joshua. He soon finds out this his wife has had sex with his slave master's son. He is utterly disguised with this. He disowns her by changing his name to Stamp Paid. He went from being so in love with his wife to repressing every memory they had made together. This story relates to Paul D's relationship with Sethe because it demonstrates that even though it may be the hardest thing to move forward with life it is the best thing.

  11. Stamp Paid had a love, hate feeling toward his wife. He loved his wife tremendously however it broke his heart when he found out about her having sex with the slave master. After this situation, he changed his name and moved on. In order for him to move on he had to leave some people behind. This is also in relation to Sethe and Paul D because they too had to leave other people behind in order to move on and live a better life for themselves.

  12. Stamp Paid revealed thin line between love and hate when he told the story of his cheating wife Vashti. They been married for almost a year.He found out his wife was cheating with the master son. After that Stamp couldn't touch his wife because it broke his heart. The master wife knew he was cheating but didn't do anything. She showed no signed when Stamp ask her about his wife. Stamp went through loving his wife to change his name to move on with his life. The story relates to him and Sethe because both of them move on with their lives. They had a leave other people behind to move on.

  13. Stamp Paid revealed a thin line between love and hate when he told the story about his wife Vashti cheating on him. Paul D was driven to a deep despair about his life and he wonders why he has not died sooner. He feels isolated and is in great pain from this depression. The forced sex did not stop. When the man was finally through with Vashti, she came home to Stamp Paid. He realized that he wanted to break his wife's neck, but instead he changed his name to Stamp Paid and began a new life for himself. Stamp Paid's story is very similar to Paul D's and Sethe's story because both characters moved forward with their lives.

  14. Tranelle : week 10

In chapter 25, the theme Love and Hate is introduced in this chapter. Paul D shows the thin line of love and hate with Sethe. Since Sethe and Paul D were slaves and lived on the plantation Sweet Home, Paul D always had a strong like for Sethe. Paul D returning back to Sethe house on 124 gave Paul D another chance at love. Paul D love grew strong for Sethe and he appreciated everything she did, such as letting him stay with her. Paul D loved every part of her from the bruise on her back that look like a tree and the fact that she keep her head high despite of her milk being stolen and the fact that she lost her husband because of it. Paul D later grew a strong hate for Sethe because he found out that she had killed her baby herself by cutting her throat and tried to kill Denver to. Stamp paid shows the thin line of love and hate with his wife. Stamp Paid loves his wife and through their marriage he never touches her. Stamp Paid and his wife were slaves and their master’s son touch Stamp paid wife every chance he had. This action turned Stamp Paid to a strong hate because he really loved his wife and the fact that she didn’t want Stamp Paid to kill the master’s son suggest that she may have falling in love with the master’s son.

Stamp Paid's story represents a thin line between love and hate. He tells his story about his wife, Vashti. He loved her deeply, as any husband should love his wife. Yet, he also hates her because she cheated on him with the master's son. He did not touch her for a year because the master's son did. He cared for her so much that he was willing to handle the situation, even if it meant killing him. Yet, she did not want him to and he was depressed and heart-broken. Stamp Paid changed his name and moved on with his life, leaving his wife behind. Paul D and Sethe both had to deal with some kind of heartbreak which then they had to leave people behind in order to fulfill their lives.

  16. In this chapter, love and hate takes place. Stamp Paid shows this after he found out that his wife had sex with the slave master. The affect of his discovery was so bad that he changed his name. By doing this, he got over what his wife did and move on with his life. This character is like Sethe because when you go through life, you have to forget about what a person did and even forget about that person.

The line between love and hate can be seen through the story of Stamp Paid explains how he could no longer love his wife. He said that he really loved his wife and they were good together, but then he found something out. He discovered that his wife slept with the slave master. The discovery shocked him so much that he had to change his name. He couldn't touch his wife for a year and he eventually left her. The line between love and hate is thin. He loved her so much that when she betrayed that loved easily turned to hate. This story can relate to Paul and Sethe because like Stamp they had to move on.

There is definitely a thin line between love and hate because Stamp Paid loved his wife and was so hurt that she slept with the master that he didn't want to touch her. After that event, the love he has for Vashti quickly turned into hate. His emotions overcame him so much that he looked at her frail neck and though about breaking it. Instead of killing her, he thought it would be better to change his name and move on with his life. Stamp Paid and Paul D's story relate because the love that Paul D has for Sethe is being pushed away by the fear and dislike he has for Beloved.

  20. Stamp Paid story exemplifies the adage that there is a thin line between love and hate because he was deeply in love with his wife but after he finds out she’d been sleeping with the master son he didn’t want to touch her and even thought about breaking her neck. Meaning the love he had for Vashti turned in to hate. Although Stamp Paid thought about killing himself, he didn’t change his name assuming that a new identity would free him of emotional ties or bonds. Stamp estranges himself emotionally from Vashti and devotes the rest of his life to helping others pay off “whatever they owed in misery.” Similar to Stamp Paid’s, Paul D is estranged from himself. After slavery Paul D had developed a coping mechanisms-tin heart”- this discourage him from loving someone too passionately. Both men tires to put their emotions behind them (not get them involved). Stamp Paid story relates to Paul D’s relationship with Sethe because Paul D has developed a coping solution that makes him not fall in love with Sethe. And also Paul D is afraid of Sethe and is being pushed away.

  21. In this chapter stamp paid show how it really was a line between love and hate. When stamp paid found out that his wife was sleeping with the slave master, he felt so low, lower than he ever felt. He would not touch her though he really wanted to snap her neck. Because he loved her so much he needed to more on. Stamp paid even changed his name because it reminded him of his wife. this is similar to paul d because if you love something you need to let is go.

  22. Stamp Paid mentions the old adage,” There’s a thin line between love and hate
and it’s so true in this story. Once being married means he was in love with his wife but after learning of her infidelity, it’s hard to maintain those same emotions as before. Just as people find crazy ways to deal with their emotions, Stamp Paid changed his name in an effort to cope with the sorrow. In other words, hate would be the next emotion he would feel towards. The same goes for Paul and Sethe D. In order for both of them to move on with their lives, they have to acknowledge the past but refrain from dwelling on it. You have to make peace with your past, so it won’t spoil your present!

  23. In Chapter 25, Stamp Paid tells Paul D how and why he changed his name. Stamp Paid’s original name was Joshua. The changing of his name came about when he found out his wife, Vashti, was cheating on him with the slave master. Stamp Paid wanted to kill the slave master but his wife wouldn’t allow him to do so. His story exemplifies the adage that there is a thin line between love and hate because Stamp Paid loved his wife but hated her actions, so much to the point that he wanted to kill her. This story is relative to Paul D’s relationship with Sethe. Paul D love Sethe but hate her because she attempted to kill her children. Stamp Paid shares this story with Paul D to justify Sethe’s actions. The underlying meaning of the conversation is everyone has a breaking point

  24. When Stamp paid came to visit Paul D at the church. He tries to relate to him by telling a story about how his wife was having a affair with his young master that he didn’t touch her for a year until she came back for good he wanted to hurt he explains, but he didn’t he just simply changed his name. This can relate to Sethe and Paul D because they have that love hate relationship that goes up and down. Instead of Stamp paid hurting his wife he took another direction and that is what he is suggesting that Paul D does for Sethe. And try to move that she killed her child.

  25. When Stamp Paid open up to Paul D about how he got his name, the story displays the thin line between love and hate when he mentions his wife and what she has done to him. The fact that she had been sleeping with the slave master enraged Stamp Paid and he even thought about breaking her neck. After finding this information out he began to hate her for what she had done. Though he hated her for doing such a thing it was the love he initially had for her that angered him to the point of such hate. If he had not loved her as much as he did then he wouldn’t have cared enough to even get as angry as he did. His story relates to Paul D and Sethe because they are going through a problem which could make Paul D feel the same way about Sethe as Stamp Paid felt about his wife. Stamp Paid still loves and cares for his wife which is why he lets her live and decides not to hurt her. He suggests that Paul D does the same thing with see and find an alternative to hurting her even though he cannot bear her secret.

  26. How does his story relate to Paul D's relationship with Sethe?
In chapter 25, the audience is introduce to a more intimate side of Paul D. and Stamp Paid. Stamp Paid tells Paul D. that when his wife, Vashti, slept with his master, was one of the lowest periods of his life. He was upset and embarrased, this is why he changed his name, no longer legally tied to his wife. When it comes to Paul D. and Stamp Paid, they are both examples of men who hate the fact that they loved someone. Along with Stamp Paid, Paul D. feels that they must forget the person they love. This is depressing and explains why Paul D. was drinking in the church. Love is a powerful feeling, an emotion that can not be faked, but can be avoided.

  27. Stamp Paid opened up to Paul D for a reason and I believe that reason was to show Paul D that he really loved and cared for Sethe, probably more than he knew himself, but there is a thin line between love and hate. What Paul D thought he felt for Sethe was hate just like Stamp Paid thought about his wife Vashti after he found out about her sleeping with her young master. However, he realized after the fact that he did not hate her in fact he still loved her very much he was just hurt by the events that transpired. He wanted Paul D to think about going back to Sethe possibly and trying to work things out I believe. That was why he told Paul D the story, he wanted to give him a chance at rekindling things with his possible soulmate.

  28. Stamp Paid loved his "wife." But we read that he wanted to kill her too. When he found out that she was sleeping with the slave master he wanted to kill her. He didn't take into consideration of her might have being forced to do it. All Stamp Paid felt was rage, toward her and the master. He wanted to kill the master. He hated him at that point. He even went to talk to the master's wife to see if she knew. It was as if he was so mad and hurt that he wanted her to feel the same pain. Stamp Paid's story relates to Paul D and Sethe's story because Paul D loved Sethe but hated the act that she committed. He couldn't bear to stay with her from that point on.

  29. The character Stamp Paid hasan interesting story. In his younger days his name was Joshua. He changed his name due to his wife, Vashti, cheating on him with the slave master. He was so enraged and wanted to kill them both, but couldn't bring himself to do it. He loved her so much but he also hated her at the same time. This relates to Paul D and Sethe's story because they are going through the same kind of relationship. Paul D always lloved Sethe but after she killed her child he hated her for that. From then on their relationship was on and off.

  30. The adage "There is a thin line between love and hate" was sort of created with Stamp Paid's adulterous marriage. He talks about how when he heard of his wife's affair with his slave master that was the lowest point in his life. As a result he changed his name to sort of disown his wife from his life.He didnt want to touch her or even be associated with her any longer. It is as if he was so in love with her that he needed to leave her for fear of what may come from his anger. This relates to Sethe and Paul D's relationship in that he was so upset with her and fearful of her actions that he cant allow his heart to fall for her.

  31. Stamp Paid's marriage explains the adage, "a thin line between love and hate." When Stamp first married his wife, he was in love with her. Stamp found out his wife committ adultery, he changed his name and moved on. This releates to Paul D and Sethe relationship because when he finds out the truth about her, he leaves her.

  32. Kelly Lockett

Stamp Paid’s story exemplifies the adage that there is a thin line between loves and hate because of how fast he turns against his wife. Stamp Paid loved his wife so much. He viewed her as a gift. The master had taken her for his son. Even though the masters wife was fully aware what was going on she did nothing to help. After finding out what happened Stamp Paid, formerly known as Joshua, wanted nothing to do with her. He was even more angry because they were only married a year. The master’s son had the chance to touch her before he did. Although he had such a strong true love for his wife after all that happened to her that love turned into hate.
His story relate to Paul D’s relationship with Sethe because when Paul D first arrives at 124 he is in love with Sethe and wants a life and relationship with her. After listening to her story, and learning of how she killed her children he develops hate for her and ends up leaving.

  33. In chapter 25 there are many instamces of a thin line between love and hate. For example, Stamp Paid and his wife Vashti. Back when Josh, Stamp Paid's name before he changed it, was a slave, his master slept with her. After he found out, he could not touch his own wife again like he used to. He changed his name in order to disown his wife. Stamp Paid also explained to Paul D what happened the day that Sethe killed Belove. Paul D later had a better understanding of what happened.

  34. Stamp exemplifies the relationship of love and the relationship of hate. I believe he felt a sense of betrayal between him and his wife. The slave master forced her to have sex with the nephew but it seems that it wasn’t a big thing to her. He talks about the love he had for his wife. He loved her so much but hated her for not letting him complete his responsibilities as a man. The changing of his named shows the way in which he felt. Beloved has forced a wedge between Sethe and Paul D, just as the slave master did to Stamp and his wife.

When investigating about Stamp it easy to see why he has grown to hate his wife. He once had so much love for his wife that when she had sex with the masters son. His love would turn into the deepest hatred since his love for had no bound. When he confronts the master’s wife she lies about knowing about the incident. Paul D was very infatuated with Sethe from the moment they met. But when he learned about her past in killing her children he runs away from her leaving her lonely. So his feelings for her would make a complete turn around just as Stamp’s did.

  36. Stamp Paid's relationship with his wife shows oerfectlt the relationship between love and hate. Stamp was married to her for a whole year and she betrayed him by sleeping with the master's son. I don't think that's what threw him over the edge I think it's the fact that she wouldn't let him kill the master's son. I think his love for her stopped him from doing it and also because he surely would've been killed. Also that he loved her so much and after he realized that she committed the ultimate betrayal he could no longer love her but hate her. She took away part of his man hood by disrespecting him and the fact that everyone knew hurt his pride and made him dispise her.

  37. Love and hate define one another. There would be no concept of hate without the concept of love. There are plenty of times people get so caught up in the complex emotion of love that they can't "See straight" and they end up letting that love take them to a dark place where they do hateful things that are "justified" by their love. Love and hate are so similar in their strong emotionality and complexity that they can easily become one another, meaning love can easily be changed to hate, acts of love can just as easily be acts of hate. Stamp Paid or Joshua as he used to be called felt this thin line of love and hate towards his wife Vashti, after the slave master forced her to have sex with the nephew. You must wonder though if given the time period, men kne that this could happen to their wives. I wonder if Stamp Paid was already resentful to the fact that he had never touched her which was obviously a big contention in the marriage but she was so non chalant about the nephew. Sometimes its hard to distinguish between two competing emotions. And this is why Paul D hasn't left town yet. He loves Sethe and hates her all the same.

  38. Stamp Paid's relationship with his wife shows a thin line between love and hate. He loved his wife Vashti so much, but after he found out she slept with the slave master, he felt so betrayed, he could not touch or look at her how he used to. He finally changed his name from Joshua to Stamp Paid to get away from his wife. His story compares to Paul D and Sethe's story because once Paul D found out about Sethe trying to kill her children and killing Beloved, he was disgusted by her. Stamp Paid tries to tell Paul D that Sethe was only doing that to protect her children, and Paul D starts to come to an understanding.

Stamp’s story exemplifies a thin line between love and hate because sometimes you can love someone so much that when they hurt you or disrespect you in a certain way you can hate them just as passionately as you once loved them. His wife Vashti just hurt him so much because she was having relations with their slave owner, but didn’t want stamp to hurt him. How is he supposed to feel at this point? He changes his name from Joshua, the name he started with, to Stamp Paid to show that any debt he owed was cleared because he was sleeping with his wife. What made it worse was that Stamp hadn’t even touched her in that way yet. Paul D’s story is similar in that he loves Sethe with all his heart but he just cannot understand how she could justify killing her child the way she did. Her love was too thick as he put it and it disturbs him. He loves her so much that he hates her for messing up his image of her in his mind.

Stamp Paid relationship with Vashti showed a thin line between love and hate. I believe Stamp Paid could not take the relationship anymore when his wife was force to have sex with the master's son. However, Stamp Paid was trying to make up for his previous mistake by showing Paul D. that Sethe was not that bad off. Sethe just had some much love for her children, that she was willing to do anything to keep them safe

Stamp's story about his relationship with his wife,Vashti, exemplifies a thin line between love and hate. Even though he loved her, he couldn't help but to hate her because she had relations with the slave master's wife. Stamp Paid was distraught because his wife wouldn't allow him to kill the slave master's son. Paul D also had a love hate relationship with Sethe. He loves her despite all the things she has been through: losing her husband, killing her children, and having a cherry choke tree in her back but there isn't any experience that she has gone through which makes Paul D hate her. Paul D does despise her for killing her children because he doesn't understand her intentions and he doesn't agree with her decisions. Both Paul D and Stamp Paid left the woman that they loved because of hate, but the love that they had for their woman caused them to feel pain.

  44. Stamp Paid's story reveals a thin line between love and hate through his marriage. In the past his name was John. When John founds out that his wife slept with the slave master, he became obsessed with the idea of breaking her neck. In the end, he can't bring himself to go through with injuring her. John realizes that he love her enough to not kill, but he will always struggle with the resentment that her actions caused. 45. Stamp paid loved his wife, and he then found out she was having relations with the slave master. Although he loved his wife, the anger from her actions led him to nearly hate her. He came to the idea of breaking her neck but found himself unable to go through with such an act due to how much he loved her. However, his hate is symbolized by the manifestation of thoughts of harming her. He changed his name to stamp paid, symbolizing a new beginning for him. Similar to Paul D relationship with Sethe, he loves her because all that she has been through but in a sense, hates her for the same reasons. He finds it hard to cope with the idea of her killing her own child, despite how much he may hate the act, he still has to respect her as the mother of her children.

  46. Stamp Paid's story about his wife, Vashti, gives an inside look into just how thin the line between love and hate is. Stamp Paid loved his wife dearly until she was forced to have sexual relations with the slave master. This destroyed Stamp Paid and he began to loathe his wife and changed his name from Joshua to Stamp Paid. Paul D is very eerily similar in the fact that Paul D loves Sethe more than anyone has ever loved a woman but he hates her when he finds out what she did to her children. It is not easy for him to wrap his mind around the thought of and reason behind a mother killing her children. Its funny how quick we can go from loving a person to hating everything about them isn't it?

Stamp Paid's story demonstrates the thin line between love and hate because he obviously loved his wife, Vashti, so much but after she slept with their slave master he could no longer be with her and his disgust turned into hate and he had to leave and change his name. Changing his name as a result of his broken heart really shows his hate because as he has said before he don't owe anybody anything anymore. This story is similar to Sethe's and Paul D's because Paul D loved Sethe but after learning that she killed her own child he couldn't be with her anymore and had to leave and move on with his life the same way that stamp paid did.

Stamp Paid's story is the epitome of "a thin line between love and hate." Vashti was his wife, so of course he loved her; when there is an infidelity in a relationship, it does not cause loss of love between the two people, simply a loss of trust which is what can ruin the relationship. Stamp Paid loved her because he always would, however, he hated the action that had been done and therefore hated her. He changed his name in order to get somewhat of a fresh start away from the thought of Vashti. This relates to Paul D's story because he and Sethe also have a similar "love/hate" relationship. He loves her very much despite knowing what she has done to her chidren -- in fact, he defends her actions. However, after Beloved comes to 124, Paul D gets a bad feeling about her. He basically feels that Sethe will not choose him over her. Therefore, Paul D feels the need to move on with his life and leave his past behind, in the same way that Stamp Paid did.

  49. Stamp Paid is one of the characters that exemplify love and hate most vividly in this story. The adage there’s a thin line between love and hate, in Stamp’s case, is suggesting the relationship that he has had with his wife. He quickly transitions from love into to a strong dislike for his wife when he learns that she has been unfaithful to him. Stamp takes many different actions to shut out the pain of being hurt by the love of his life. One way this happened is by changing his name. The connection the Stamp Paid’s relationship has with Paul D and Sethe is that transitions have to be made. Paul D finds it very difficult to have to forget about Sethe and what happened between them.

  50. The line between love and hate is a very thin one for Stamp Paid who was once known as Joshua. He had been married to his wife for a year and had not touched her that entire time. He loved her very much even though he never saw her. He learned that she had been sleeping with the master's son and that disgusted him greatly. Stamp said when he saw the ribbon around her neck that the boy had given her he wanted to snap it and kill him but Vashti would not allow him to. He hated her after that incident and changed his name to Stamp Paid. This story relates to Paul D's because he loved Sethe in spite of everything she had gone through in terms of losing her husband, having her milk taken from her and being the outcast of the town. His love for her quickly turned to hate once he found out what she had done to her baby. He felt he could not be with her because it was too much for him to bare.

  51. Stamp Paid’s relationship with his wife exemplifies how the line between love and hate is sometimes blurred. Stamp loved his wife unconditionally and the feelings within the marriage were mutual. Vashti, his wife, was forced to step outside of the marriage and have sex with the slave owner. Stamp Paid could not stand the sight of his wife. Even though he loved her, he hated the circumstances of the situation. He hated so much that he decided to change his name. Joshua, his former name, reminded him of his life with Vashti; he hated the thought of her and their marriage. Paul D and Stamp Paid are ironically similar when referring to their significant others. They love them abundantly but do not like the decisions they make, Vashti having sex with her master and Sethe killing her children. Neither of the men can understand and fathom why they would commit actions of this caliber.
