ReplyDeleteWhile reading Chapter 19 I noticed how the character “Stamp Paid” had this unusual name unlike any of the other characters in the book. Everyone else had normal everyday names except for this particular character. The significance of the character’s name can relate to him because he helped many of the freed slaves. “He wrote their letters and read to them the ones they received” (200). This line indicates that Stamp Paid helped slaves, who were freed and those who were not freed, communicate with one another. At this time in history most African-American couldn’t read or write because they weren’t allowed to receive a formal education. Stamp Paid assisted those who didn’t possess this talent. Everyone knows you have to have a postage stamp to send mail and I feel as if his role being played in the mailing process is displayed by his unique name.
ReplyDeleteIn Chapter 19, Sethe is in my opinion in a really good place. She takes the advice of Baby Suggs: to lay it all down, sword and shield (203). Sethe seems to be happy in this chapter. She indeed knows the manifestation of her baby girl is in her presence and she is over that fact that Paul D walked out on her just like every other man in her life. She thinks about the words spoken by Baby Suggs and finds peace within her soul. She realizes those on the outside will form their opinion about her, but all that doesn’t matter because she has all she need in her home with her girls. Her current state of mind can relate to Stamp Paid because it was he who showed Paul D the newspaper clipping of Sethe’s attempt to kill her children. Had Paul D not left Sethe I don’t think she would have ever come to this point.

ReplyDeleteI think Stamp Paid's name stands for the work he does with the fugitive slaves. When you think of a stamp, you think of something that needs to go on a envelope. That envelope is then something that needs to to be delivered. A person needs that stamp in oreder for their letter to reach the person it's intended for. The slaves entering that certain part of Ohio needed Stamp Paid's help to make it to safety. I think his name represents Sethe's current state of mind because of the last part of his name which is Paid. When you think of something being paid for then you think of it as being over and done with and you move on from it, like a bill. In this chapter, Sethe finally excepts what happened to her and her dead child. She realizes that it is done with and there is nothing left to do but to move on from it. Thats her mentality in chapter 19.
A stamp is something on an envelope that enables it to be delivered. Stamp Paid was that person that all slaves entering that part of Ohio needed in order to get to freedom. Sethe state of mind relating to the name Stamp Paid is that Sethe finally accpets what she did to her children by killing them out of love and decides that its time to finally go on with her life.
ReplyDeleteA stamp is used to show that someone paid for their mail to be delivered or a form of payment. Stamps feels like he paid because he had to give his wife to another man not by chose but by force. That hurt him deeply because she was all he had and he has not been able to get over that. This coincides with Sethe because she has had something happen in her life where she has paid too. She rralizes she killedmher children and can now heal.

ReplyDeleteIn this chapter we are introduced to a new character "Stamp Paid." The significance of his name is that stamps are put on letters for them to be mailed. Without a stamp a letter cannot be delivered; he was that person where slaves got their information. Stamp Paid has spent his life helping those in need. Before the Civil War, he hid runaway slaves and took care of them. He also passed secret information to help them. Stamp Paid also helped Sethe and the Baby Denver get across the Ohio River to freedom. His names relates to Sethe's current state of mind because now Sethe had realized she need to move on. She remembers that she noticed color again after Paul D came to stay with her. For Sethe, the recognition of color symbolized the opening of herself to experience life.

ReplyDeleteStamp Paid’s name is significant to his story because of his achievements and sacrifice’s he made to help out other people. Stamp Paid would always help the slaves. He helped the Underground Railroad and is one of the reasons why Sethe is free, because he helped her across the river. He put others before himself. He was forced to give up his wife to a master. His wife was seen, as a special to him and this was very hard for him to do. So he feels that he has “Paid” off his debts and hopes people will keep that in mind. He no longer owes anyone anything. In chapter 19 it seems as if everything is coming into place for Sethe. She is doing more with her children and has finally realized that her baby is with her when she hears Beloved. She remembers some of the bad things that happened in her slave days, but she tries to look past that and move on. Stamp Paid’s name relates to Sethe’s current state because she has paid off her debts to with all the bad things that happened to her, and that she has done. With all that done and behind her she can become a better person.
"Stamp Paid" was a good man who helped slaves reach freedom and wrote letters to their loved ones. He also gave up his wife to his slave master in an act of selflessness. He feels as if his debt to the world has been paid by his kindness. His name is relatable to Sethe's state of mind in Chapter 19. Her worries and troubles seem to come to an end when her daughter Beloved returns to her. Sethe had spend the past years in sadness, isolation and regret. When she recognizes Beloved as the daughter she killed, she too feels that her debts to society have been paid. She feels she no longer has to concern herself with things that obligate her, she only wants to spend time doteing upon Beloved.

ReplyDeleteStamp Paid, is a new character with a rather unique name. His character is significant because he has endured many trials and tribulations. He was once the transportation expert during the underground railroad, and had help countless blacks escape slavery and oppression including Sethe. Stamp Paid chose this name because he feels that he has paid his debt to society and owes nothing to no one else, especially after he was forced to give up his wife to his master's son. This act alone would be the last straw. Sethe is now learning how to move on from the death and abandonment of her children. Beloved was humming a song that Sethe used to sing to her children and she would soon realize that Beloved was truly her daughter. Her new attitude, just like Stamp, can be interpreted that Sethe feels that she has nothing else to owe to society and she can only move forward. So Stamp has given her a new lease on life.
Stamp Paid’s unique name represents the slaves that she was helping to set free. A stamp that's been paid symbolizes something that is in preparation to be sent off just like the slaves were to be. Sethe resembles some these qualities as well. Sethe has been dealing with the guilt her daughter’s murder and it has hindered her in caring for her other children. She is now realizing the importance of dealing with that guilt and moving on with her life. Like the old adage goes, “Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil your present”.
ReplyDeleteStamp Paids name is important because in order for a letter to reach it's destination it needs a stamp. In relation to this comparison the slaves needed Stamp in order to reach their destination which was freedom. In this chapter Sethe finally realizes that it it time to move on from the past and her child's death. Sethe does a lot of maturing and in relation to Stamp Paid's name she has paid her dues in guilt and knows it is time to move on.
ReplyDeleteStamp Paid was born with the name Joshua but later changed it to the one we are more familiar with because he gave his wife to his Master's son. That action of giving up his wife was the way he payed off his debt, and with that he felt that he did not owe anyone anything. To help others "...pay out and off whatever they owed in misery" Stamp Paid devoted his life to bringing them to freedom and once they were free he would say "You paid it;now life owes you" (218). Sethe feels quite similarly the day after she realizes that Beloved came back. Beloved's return in Sethe's eyes was a sign that her daughter was not upset with her although her spirit acted out in rage as if it were. "She ain't mad with me. Not a bit" Sether thought as she was on her way to work and thought several times throughout the day that she did not have to explain anything to Beloved and that Beloved understood (214). Sethe smiled because she had laid down everything "...sword and shield." just like Baby Suggs had advised during her life (203). Sethe's debt was payed just like Stamps and she did not owe any explinations and she was not forced to remember because Beloved already knew and understood it all (216).

ReplyDeleteA stamp is an important part of the mailing process, without it a letter won't be mailed. Just like that stamp on that envelope, without Stamp Paid all those slaves wouldn't have been given the opportunity to have better lives. In fact it was Stamp Paid who helped Sethe escape to freedom. Sethe has learned that while she did a horrible thing, she has to move on in order to have the opportunity for a better life.
"Stamp Paid" name stood out from the other characters. In slave time most of the Americans wouldn't allow to read or write. "He wrote their letters and read to them" as stated on page 200. He help many of the freed slaves. When people think of Stamp they think of a stamp at the top of the envelope. An envelope is for mail that need to be delivered. Without the stamp the envelope can't be delivered. His last name is Paid and it relates to Sethe current state of mind. Paid means something that's over and done with. She went on with her life. Sethe accept what happen to her in the past and her died child.

ReplyDeleteIn chapter 19, the narrator introduces the character Stamp paid. The narrator tells Stamp Paid Story about the devastation he endured during slavery. Stamp paid name is significant because his name means to help something. When mailing an envelope a stamp is needed in order for delivery. When something is paid for that’s the confirmation that a order is complete. Stamp Paid help slaves to safety. He help free slaves and his name describes what he did.

ReplyDeleteFirst off a stamp lets post offices know that the letter, package, etc., has been paid to be sent to where ever it needs to go. Stamp felt that his debt was paid because he had to send his wife away by force. She was the person he truly loved and having to give her up meant he didn’t owe anything to anyone. Also he helped “deliver” fugitive slaves to Ohio in order to give them their freedom. This relates to seethe because she also had to something she didn’t want to do felt she had to do. Now she feels as though it is time to move on and live and love the children she now has.

ReplyDeleteWe first learn about Stamp Paid at the feast that Baby Suggs have at 124 were Stamp Paid brings a bucket of blackberries. In chapter 19 tell the story while Stamp was a slave, he was forced to give his wife up to sleep with another man. He believed that his wife was so important to him and after this act he is hurt so terribly. For this reason, he changed his name from Joshua to Stamp Paid. After becoming freed Stamp Paid became a ferryman over the Ohio River. He sees it as his way of helping people pay their own debts. He lasts mentions Denver as "his heart," (313) Denver represents his identity to himself. In connection to Stamp Paid name Sethe has now accepted everything that happen in the past and owned up to the death of her child (guilt).

When she killed her daughter, she felt that she had paid her debt. She have learn to deal with the past about Beloved and moved on.

ReplyDelete"Stamp Paid" is a unique character whose name stands out from all of the other characters. When you think of a "stamp" you think of something that has to be mailed or delievered. Without a stamp it cannot be delievered. Stamp Paid "delievered" many slaves to freedom, including Sethe. When you think of his last name "Paid" you think of something that is over and done with. His last name relates to Sethe's state of mind because now she learns that what she did was horrible and it is now over and done with. So now she hve the ability to move on.
I believe that Stamp Paid's name is significant because it represents something that slaves were not only not allowed to do, but they did not know how to do. As slaves they did not know how to read or write because they were not taught, but Stamp Paid did. Therefore he would read and write for them which helped the slaves tremendously. I think with this act of kindness he gave the slaves a better chance at life. He was overall a good person and did things for other people all of the time. Despite him having to give his wife to another man he still did good for others. I know he was deeply hurt for having to give his wife away but it was something he had to do. Even with all of his acts of kindness, I do not think he should have told Paul D about Sethe's past because it was not his place. I'm sure that Sethe was going to tell him in due time and I know Stamp Paid thought he was doing right for Paul D, but he did not think about the negative affects this could have on Sethe or her daughter until after the fact. I think both Sethe and Stamp Paid mindsets are focused on Denver. From the time she was born she never really had a steady person in her life other than Baby Suggs and when she died she was left with no one. Then Paul D came into the picture and now he is gone. Their concern is how is Paul D's leaving going to affect her.
ReplyDeleteIn Chapter 19, Stamp Paid's story is revealed. He suffered many tragedies and hardships during slavery, but the most painful one was having to give his wife to his master so that she could sleep with one of his master's sons. This was so agonizing for Stamp Paid that he knew he could not take anymore. He had decided that he had paid his final price for slavery which is why he changed his name from Joshua to Stamp Paid. This concept of paying the price for slavery was relevant to Sethe's mindset because she had recently discovered that the Beloved was a reincarnation of her dead daughter. She becomes overjoyed at the thought of having back some of the sacrifice and obstacles she had paid for slavery.
ReplyDeleteThink Stamp Paid's name stands for the work he does with the fugitive slaves. When you think of a stamp, you think of something that needs to go on a envelope. That envelope is then something that needs to to be delivered. Sethe state of mind relating to the name Stamp Paid is that Sethe finally accpets what she did to her children by killing them out of love and decides that its time to finally go on with her life. that hurt him deeply because she was all he had and he has not been able to get over that. This coincides with Sethe because she has had something happen in her life where she has paid too.

ReplyDeleteStamp Paid is a very interesting character in this story. He views himself as a spiritual advisor and a person who help freed a number of slave. He left an impact or "stamp" in there life. He view the people he freed and help as being in debt to him. He says a number of time in Chapter 19 that he always will be openly welcomed into anyone's house. Sethe present state can be described by Stamp Paid's last name. She "paid" her do's and going to "lay them all down", just as Baby Suggs instructed her.
Stamp Paid's name is very symbolic in chapter 19. Stamp Paid is notorious for releasing slaves. The name "stamp" is symbolic because stamp has impacted many newly freed slaves. Stamps last name "paid" is symbolic of the price of freedom. Sethe feels that she has paid the price and she can press forward with her life.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 19, it was very weird to come across a character with the name of Stamp Paid. Why would anyone want to be called that? He was a man who helped many slaves to get to freedom and to write letters to their loved ones. He actually helped Sethe to cross the river to freedom. Without him many would have had to face more hardships in addition to how their lives had already been affected. He put other people’s lives ahead of his. Maybe the name Stamp Paid means he has paid his debt to society by sacrificing his life and everything that it consisted of.
ReplyDeleteStamp Paid is an ex-slave who changed his name from Joshua. He helps the other ex-slaves by reading and writing for them and most importantly helping them cross from in the south to the north. As repayment for his assistance, the door is always open for him in their homes. Stamp Paid also saved Denver from her mother killing her. Stamp Paid told Paul D about Sethe's crime. I believe his name is symbolic of debt paid in full. Once a stamp is tagged at the post office that's it. That letter is going where it's supposed to and it is done. I think it is also symbolic of something a black man is not supposed to have (a stamp)and Stamp is doing all the stuff he is not supposed to be doing. For example the reading and the writing and the helping slaves.
ReplyDeleteNicole Oseni: Week 8
ReplyDeleteThe symbolic meaning of Stamp Paid's name is very complex. The more obvious or surface meaning is one relating to postal stamps and to freeing slaves. I believe there is a deeper meaning. Stamp Paid changed his name in the first place to rid him self of the feeling that he owed anyone anything. I feel as though his name signifies that he has paid his debt to society, paid his dues, by being a slave. His stamp is paid for. The place that Sethe is in right now shows the reader that she has also come to terms with her situation and is ready to put her past behind her. She is also beginning to feel that she too does not owe anyone anything.
Shannon Douglas: Week 8
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 19, we are introduced to Stamp Paid who has had a very intimate relationship with Baby Suggs. His allegorical name can be connected to several things two of which are slavery, and debt. We use stamps when we need to send mail throughout the country, it is our means of monetary value for the package. Stamp Paid saw himself in this same way. While aiding slaves to freedom he was their "stamp" to ensure that they reached their destination. His last name Paid relates directly to the debts he had once owed. When Stamp Paid, born Joshua, was a slave he offered his wife as a sacrifice to pay off his debt. In the same way, Sethe attempted to get rid of her children so they would not owe society a debt. When Stamp Paid gave away his wife this was a symbol of freedom, all at once all of his debts were paid. Similar to Sethe's situation, Stamp wanted Sethe to see that she couldn't change what happened to her children. Instead she should view the situation as a debt being paid off and move on.
Stamp Paid's name holds much significance, seeing that you cannot send any form of mail without paying for a stamp to go on it. Stamp Paid was the person that most slaves would go to to find out vital information on freedom and safety. The slaves were symbolic of a letter being sent in the mail, and Stamp Paid was the stamp placed upon the letter in order for it to be sent. This causes Sethe to be able to deal with her depression. When I think about the situation the first thing that comes to mind is debt. Stamp Paid can be assumed to be the symbol of Sethe's debts being paid off. This allows her to move on with her life and not concentrate so much on her past altercations and actions.
ReplyDeleteStamp Paid has been trough many struggles and tribulations while he was a slave. On an envelope if there aren't enough stamps for the postage, the letter can't be mailed. Stamp Paid refers to him teaching the slaves to read and write so they can escape to the North. Stamp Paid can be related to Sethe accepting the fact that her children are gone and also accepting what she did to them in the past and relieving herself from the situation. The burden of her killing her children was finally lifted off her chest.
ReplyDeleteThe reason his name is "Stamp Paid," is because he helped many of the slaves communicate. It was significant, because he helped them read their and write their letters for them. This was their way of communication since many of them were uneducated. His name signifies his importance, because he was important as a stamp. Without him, the letters are useless. Without stamps, the letters are just as useless. Chapter 19 turns for a more positive route in Sethe's life. She starts to change her views. She realized the need to move on.
ReplyDeleteIn this reading we are introduced to the new character called “stamp Paid.” This name holds much significance throughout this part of the story. Stamp Paid was a source of information for slaves. This connects with his name in the way that stamps is one the primary objects needed for letters of information to get sent out, without a stamp a person didn’t receive the mail with the information that they needed. Now before the Civil War began, Stamp Paid was known for helping out slaves that were trying to escape from bondage. He hid runaways, gave them the care they needed, and passed secretive information along to make their escape much easier. The ultimate significance of Stamp Paid in regards to Sethe is that he helped Sethe, along with Denver when she was a baby, get across the Ohio River in order to escape the life of slavery. Stamp Paid’s name connects with Sethe’s state of mind because it gives her the immediate realization that she must move on from her current situation.
ReplyDeleteStamp Paid is of course unique and representative of his work with helping fugitive slaves communicate, but i think his name refers to Sethe more. When Stamp told Paul D about Sethe's pass it was like the message had finally been delivered. The "stamp" had been "paid" and Sethe's past had finally been delivered. Stamp is the gateway that allows messages to be recieved.
ReplyDeleteKaredonovan Oliver: Week 8
ReplyDeleteStamp Paid's name is a significant symbol for "all debts paid" as he said in chapter 19 he paid all his debts to the world when he gave his wife to his former master. Stamp Paid is almost like saying that you have a bill enclosed in a letter containing a full amount of whatever debt you may owe and it is sealed with at stamp signifying that it is finished. His name is significant to Sethe's mindstate in chapter 19 because she realizes that after all the things she has been through in her life, she deserves peace, and should not have to go throught the troubles of worrying about what others may think of her choices.
Erica Gbekle: Week 8
ReplyDeleteStamp Paid is not an ordinary name. All the other characters have normal names. Stamp Paid name is very unique just like himself. He helps other freed slaves. He helps slaves try to move on with their lives. Just like how Stamped Paid helps others move on with their lives is the same thing that Sethe is doing with hers. She is trying to move on and start new.
Sarion Granger: Week 8
ReplyDeleteIn Chapter 19, we are introduced to a new character named "Stamp Paid." He helped slaves that were freed and those that were not freed, to communicate with one another. At this time most African Americans couldn't read because they weren't allowed to receive a formal education. Stamp Paid provided assistance to those that were in need. He was forced to give up his wife to another man, which was very hard for him to do. He feels that he has "Paid" off his debts and that he no longer owes anyone anything. In Chapter 19, it seems as if everything is going good for Sethe. Sethe has finally decided to accept what she did in the past and move on with her life. She is spending more time with her children and has finally accepted that Beloved is her dead daughter. Stamp Paid's name relates to Sethe's current state because she has paid off her debts. She can now become a better person.
The significance of Stamp Paid's name is that a stamp is required to deliver a package. Slaves were stamped in a way also. They were also shipped out to various states. In this reading, Sethe realized what she did and in a way, she paid a visit to her past.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion of Stamp Paid, I think that his name has a dualistic meaning. His underground activities granted slaves freedom like mail stamps granting transportation, henceforth his name, Stamp Paid. Another meaning is how he describes his activites as debt paid for society, owing nothing. Stamp Paid relates to Sethe's state of mind in Chapter 19 beacause Sethe feels that she should not be held back by society, and that she should continue living live to the fullest.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Stamp Paid's name has a lot to do with his work he had previously done with the fugitive slaves. He looks at himself as a "God-send" and the Stamp was his mark he'd left on their lives forever. I believe the Paid part of his name had to do with how he sort of paid his debt to society. For example the situation with having to give his wife to his master. I think the name relates to Sethe because in a sense she had to pay her debt also with the lives of her children to obtain peace within herself. When Sethe realizes that Beloved is a sort of reincarnation of her own child she feels a sort of relief and joy to have received a gift back from what she had to go through when she gave them up.
ReplyDelete"stamp paid" the new character in the book. a stamp is something a letter need to go on to the next place. stamp paid being a man represented the stamp and the slaves where the envelope or what ever need to go on because they needed him in order to get to freedom. this relates to setha because she relizes that paul d moving on and beloved being there is what she needed to move on with her life to not be sad again. setha is at a very happy state in her life right now

ReplyDeleteStamp Paid is a new character to the story, with a very unique name. In everyday life, stamps are placed on packages and mail to show that they have been paid for and are ready for delivery to their final destination. Paid stamps represent something that has gone to completion or is in the process of being complete. Stamp Paid's name, in the same way, represents him coming to 124 for the purpose of "completing" Sethe's life or showing that she on her way to "completion." When Stamp Paid first comes to 124, he witnesses certain things from the window and comes to the conclusion that Beloved is Sethe's resurrected daughter and that Sethe is finally regrouping and getting her life back on track -- moving forward rather than looking back. This idea that Stamp Paid has relates directly back to his "name" and Sethe's state-of-mind at this point in the novel. Sethe is at a point that she wants to be go forward and not come back -- exactly what a letter needs in order to go forward, a paid stamp. However, there are two ways in which this can be interpretted. On one hand, a stamp can be the final thing that gets a letter where it is supposed to be going, never to be returned to the sender. However, if there are other things missing from that letter, then regardless if there is a paid stamp of not, the letter will regress and not make it to its final destination. The final chapters of the novel will reveal if Stamp Paid is the "final paid stamp" that Sethe needs in her life to move forward, or if he is just a stop that seems to move her forward but in reality, keeps her in the same place.
Stamp Paid's name stands for the stamps that go on packages, and the paid represents his emotional and moral debts that need to be paid off for the rest of his life, hence why he renamed himself “Stamp Paid.” His name has to do with the stamps that were put on slaves to identify them as property and whatnot. This relates to how Sethe is feeling because after Baby Suggs dies, he feels that it is not his responsibility to take care of Sethe while she is in her state of depression.
ReplyDeleteIn this chapter we are introduced to the new character, stamp paid. A stamp is something put on a letter before it is sent. It is mandatory before the letter is sent. Paid means complete or done. Stamp Paid is the person who help free the slaves. They needed him in order to get to their sanity. Just as a letter needs a stamp. This relates to Sethe because , she finally has come to terms with her depression. She realizes what she did to her children She is finally ready to move on with her life.
ReplyDeleteA new character in the book “stamp paid” can be represented in so many. A stamp is something you put on a letter so that it can be sent to its destination; you have to pay for these stamps. I think that it means that he knows all the business of everyone that he keeps tabs on everyone. He knows everything about a lot of people; he is kind of like the towns gossiper that came from sweet home.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 19, we are introduced to a new character with a unique name, Stamp Paid. Stamp Paid is a man that help slaves get to where they needed to go and helped them to freedom. Just as a paid stamp is placed on a letter in order for it to be mailed or moved forward, this is how he helped slaves. This relates to Sethe because she now realizes what she did to her kids was wrong and she wants to forgive herself and move forward with her life.
ReplyDeleteChapter 19 presents a new character named Stamp Paid. He is a man that helped deliver slaves to freedom. A stamp is needed for mail to be processed and delivered, and this is what Stamp Paid did for the slaves. This relates to Sethe because she finally figures out that what she did to her children was wrong, and that its is time to move on with her life and start working on her future.
ReplyDeleteStamp Paid becomes a significant character that reflects Sethe's attitude in Chapter 19. His name is allegorical because just like a stamp gives letters access to travel, Stamp Paid gave slaves free passage through Ohio. The second part of his name, "paid" stands for a price that has been paid. This name symbolizes the end or termination of someone/something. Stamp Paid's name reflects Sethe's attitude because she is finally dealing with the tragedy of her children, moving on and no longer casting herself as the blame. Moreover, she is over Paul D and thankful for her girls: Denver and Beloved, the reincarnation of her daughter.
ReplyDeleteStamp Paid's name was significant name because it related to his work in the underground railroad. His name relates to Sethe's state of mind because it represents the struggle of slavery and the history of its after math. They both are dealing with the horrors that slavery has brought upon them. Stamp Paid represents the price that both of them paid in order to be released from slavery. Sethe's lost her child, and Stamp Paid changed his name so that he didn't have to be reminded of his past. Stamp paid can also be interpreted as the final stage in both of their live. When a price is paid, you no longer have to worry about how to deal with it. You just progress toward the future. Stamp Paid and Sethe are now at a point in their lives where they can stop blaming others and themselves for their past and just enjoy the present and look forward to the future.
